Lumbar support buying guide: fit, depth and materials
A lumbar support only helps if it fits your chair and your back. This guide covers the order that works: adjust the chair first, then choose a support with the right height, depth and material.
Adjust the chair first
- Feet flat, knees near hip height, small gap behind the knees.
- Screen about arm's length away, top near eye level.
- Elbows near a right angle, shoulders relaxed.
Then choose the support
| Consideration | What to check |
|---|---|
| Height | Adjustable or fixed; sits in the lower-back curve above the hips |
| Thickness | Support without pushing the pelvis forward |
| Material | Memory foam (steady) vs gel/ventilated (cooler) |
| Cover | Removable and washable |
| Straps | Keeps it in place on your chair |

Movement matters most
No cushion replaces changing position. Stand and move regularly; support works best alongside activity.
When to seek advice
Ongoing back pain, or pain with numbness or weakness, needs medical assessment. A cushion is a comfort aid, not a treatment.
