How to position a lumbar support cushion
Share
Position the cushion in the hollow of your lower back, then adjust it until it gives comfortable contact without pushing you away from the backrest. Set the chair first. There is no single correct height or thickness for everyone, and a population-average spinal measurement is not a cushion specification.
You do not need a ruler. You need a chair that is set up for you, a cushion placed by feel, and the willingness to remove it if it makes sitting worse.
Set the chair before adding a cushion
- Adjust the seat height so your feet are supported. Use a footrest if your feet dangle.
- Check that the seat edge does not press into the backs of your knees.
- Adjust the backrest so you can sit comfortably without reaching forward for the desk.
- Try the chair’s own lumbar adjustment first. Many chairs have one, and adding a cushion on top of an unused adjustment rarely helps.
Fit the cushion
- Sit back and find the inward curve of your lower back by feel.
- Place the cushion there and lean back gently.
- Move it up or down until the contact feels comfortable, not until it matches a number.
- If it pushes you forward, creates a pressure point, or makes the chair harder to use, reduce its thickness where the product allows, or remove it.
- Recheck comfort during use. Stop using it if your symptoms worsen. Discomfort is not something you need to break in.
Why there is no universal centimetre setting
Studies of seated anatomy and preferred chair settings describe groups of people under particular measurement conditions. They do not establish one fitting height for every person, and they do not establish one ideal thickness for a separate cushion.
Uncompressed product thickness is also not the same as the space it fills when someone leans against it. Foam compression, cushion shape, the chair back and how you sit all change the fit. Use published dimensions to decide whether a product is plausible for your chair, not as a prescription for your spine.

Comfort is not the same as treatment
A cushion may change how a chair feels. That does not establish that it treats or prevents low back pain. Studies of braces, belts and other lumbar supports are not automatically studies of loose office-chair cushions, and the Cochrane evidence on lumbar supports is mixed, with some trials showing little or no difference.
This page does not establish a medically safe daily duration. Follow the product instructions, change position regularly, and seek advice for persistent or worsening symptoms. Movement over the course of a day matters more than any single support product.
Worth it if
- You sit for long stretches and want more comfortable contact with the backrest
- Your chair’s own adjustment has been tried and is insufficient
- You are willing to remove it if it makes things worse
Skip it if
- You want it to treat or prevent back pain
- Your chair is already set up well and comfortable
- You have persistent or worsening symptoms, which need assessment rather than an accessory
